WHO WE ARE

Farmer Foodshare is a Triangle-based, nonprofit food hub whose mission is to increase access to fresh, local food for all and to support the viability of marginalized NC farmers to create an equitable food system.

WHY WE’RE HERE

Farming is North Carolina’s largest industry – yet local farmers struggle, and more communities face hunger every day.

Independent family farms face unique challenges. Beginning, small, and mid-sized farms are often excluded from subsidies. BIPOC and women-owned farms are historically disadvantaged. Our state ranks 8th in the nation in agriculture, and still, the number of farmers is in decline.

Despite NC’s rich agricultural region, more than 10% of households don’t have enough to eat, and traditional food security efforts lack dignity, quality nutrition, and stability.

We envision a vibrant and equitable regional food system, where local farms thrive and every person living in our foodshed can access the fresh, local food grown here.

WHAT WE DO

We support local farmers by purchasing fresh, nutritious, high-quality produce year-round, prioritizing small farms and historically marginalized growers. The produce is both donated to food distribution organizations and sold to local food service institutions.

Every week, our staff and volunteers pack hundreds of food boxes which we deliver to community partners that distribute food directly to Triangle-area families experiencing food insecurity. We supply local restaurants, grocers, and dining programs with locally grown fruits and vegetables year-round, and all income from our wholesale program is reinvested into our food access initiatives.
